Meet the Apple Class team

Message from Apple Class

Welcome back! We hope you have had a fantastic holiday!

Apple class has 1 Teacher, 3 Teaching Assistants and 1 Lunch Time Supervisor. Apple class this year includes 5 boys and 2 girls. We are a busy class that likes to be outside exploring our environment. We are very lucky this year to have our own outside space and conservatory area for messy play and art activities.

We have lots of exciting topics and trips planned this year. Please see below what your child will be learning in each subject area.

Literacy: In our class story, we will be reading the story of ‘We’re Going on a Bear Hunt’. This links well with our topic of ‘buildings, homes and habitats’ and will also allow the children to engage in role play linked to familiar experiences and it will give us the opportunity to adventure in our local environment too. We will continue to incorporate communication sessions every morning linked to your child’s ILP targets.

Numeracy: In our numeracy lesson, we will be focussing on shape. We are hoping to become familiar with our 4 basic 2D shapes and explore these shapes in a variety of different contexts to show our understanding. We will enjoy exploring shapes in sensory materials, printing with shapes, finding shapes in our environment and enjoy singing songs and rhymes associated with shapes.

Topic: This half term we will be learning all about ‘Buildings, homes and habitats’. This will link very closely with our story, looking at where different mini beasts and insects live and what their homes and habitats might look like? Lots of sensory activities within water, grass and mud!

PE: We are lucky to be having Rachel at the start of this year who specialises in delivering an adapted PE session for our children which best meets their needs. Pupils will also work on their physical independent learning targets throughout this time.  We are also very lucky to have a swimming slot on a Thursday afternoon and this will hopefully continue until the end of the year. Within swimming sessions your child will focus on communication sessions as well as targets towards a Green Fold swimming certificate and badge.

Food technology: We will be focusing on a variety of skills linked to introducing new equipment and ingredients. We will be looking at using different utensils and different methods of making foods, such as rolling, whisking and cutting. We will also try to introduce new foods through ‘fun with food’ sessions as well as food phonics.

How can you help at home?

Children will receive a postcard home on Fridays, which will allow parents and carers the opportunity to share information about what the children have been doing at the weekend. We will use this information to communicate with the children about what they have been doing and use it as a topic to motivate speaking, listening and develop our writing skills. Children will access a range of picture communication boards and symbols to support their understanding at a suitable level.

We are looking forward to an exciting term ahead. If you have any questions or queries, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Yours sincerely,

Kathryn Liddle
