Message from Oak Class

Welcome back and a very Happy New Year to you all!

This half term is set to be full of excitement and adventure as we start new topics and learning experiences now that we have become more familiar with those set out at the start of the year.

Topic: This half term we are looking forward to some enchanted learning through our ‘Magic, myths and legends’ topic. We will be looking forward to finding out about witches and wizards and their magical behaviours and powers. Throughout the topic, we will be following spells, reinforcing our understanding of weight by making a witches brew and following a set of instructions. We will be reinforcing our science skills through identifying changes in our witches potions too. We will also be concentrating on re-telling the story of legends and understanding the difference between real and pretend characters.

Literacy: In our class story, we will be reading the story of ‘Night monkey, day monkey’. This links well with our maths topic which will allow us to reinforce the concept of time, in addition to encompassing our personalised literacy targets.

Numeracy: In our numeracy lesson, we will be focussing upon shape, time and patterns. We are hoping to count and categorise for lots of different purposes in and around the school grounds to ensure we are always given plenty of opportunities to practice our number skills. We will also be working upon personalised targets throughout the week linked to all areas of numeracy.

PE: We are lucky to be having an outside agency coming into school to deliver rugby. Some pupils from Oak class took part in this last year and learnt a lot throughout the year. Pupils will also work on their physical independent learning targets throughout this time.

Food technology: We will be working on a variety of skills linked to introducing new equipment, finding ingredients and following a set of simple instructions. Our food technology lessons are also used as an alternative context for pupils to develop basic literacy and numeracy skills.

We are looking forward to an exciting term ahead. If you have any questions or queries, please do not hesitate to contact me or communicate through the school diary.

How can you help at home?

All children will be sent a postcard home on Friday which will allow parents and carers the opportunity to share information about what the children have been doing at the weekend. We will use this information to communicate with the children about what they have been doing and use it as a topic to motivate speaking and listening. Children will access a range of picture communication boards and symbols to support their understanding at a suitable level. However, if you would like additional resources to be sent home to support your child’s learning, please let me know.

We are looking forward to an exciting term ahead and hope you’ll visit our page again to look at our class photos.
